The air quality gap between the northern and southern parts of Beijing significantly narrowed in 2022, with the average PM2.5 concentration difference decreasing from 63 to 16 micrograms per cubic meter over the past decade.

The southern part of Beijing, characterized by a higher population density and more industrialization, showed higher emission intensity per unit area compared to its urban and northern counterparts. In response to notable pollution in this area, Beijing has consistently provided targeted support for air pollution control, including financial and supervisory assistance, along with regional coordination.

"The gradual reduction in the north-south concentration difference is not only due to the implementation of financial policies and intensified efforts but also to the continuous progress in overall pollution prevention and control across the city," said Xie Jinkai, deputy director of the Atmospheric Environment Department of the Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau. "The improvement and convergence of air quality in all districts are concrete manifestations of Beijing's comprehensive and sustained advancements in overall air quality."

As of 2022, Beijing’s annual average PM2.5 concentration has decreased to 30 micrograms per cubic meter, nearly 60 micrograms less per cubic meter than a decade ago. The number of days with excellent air quality has increased by almost four months, while the number of heavily polluted days has dropped to three.
