E-mail China.org.cn, November 23, 2023Beijing's bike-sharing usage reached a historic high this year, with more than 1 billion rides recorded by mid-November, as more people opt for a green and low-carbon lifestyle.
As of Nov. 17, the daily average of bike-sharing rides in the capital city surged to nearly 3.12 million, marking a 9.04% increase over 2022, said Zhao Hanlu, an official with the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport.
Over the past three years, shared bike usage has grown steadily in Beijing, with 690 million rides recorded in 2020, 950 million in 2021, and 968 million in 2022. Bike-sharing has transformed from a green, low-carbon mode of transport to a representation of a simple, minimalist lifestyle, Zhao said.
Beijing's bike-sharing market is dominated by three major operators: Meituan Bikes, Didi Bike, and HelloRide. Their services span all administrative districts of the city. By the end of October, more than 1 million shared bikes were registered in the city, with 800,000 in the central urban area.
Bike-sharing usage in Beijing exhibits significant seasonal fluctuations influenced by weather and temperature variations. With the onset of winter, the municipal transport commission plans to continue its policy of dynamic quantity control, reducing the number of shared bikes during the off-season.
