Beijing has topped the Nature Index global science city ranking in 2023 for the seventh year straight.

The newest ranking was revealed during the launch of the Global Innovative Hubs Index 2023 and the Nature Index-Science Cities 2023 in Tsinghua University on Wednesday.

Tracking research papers published on 82 natural science journals by global major cities, the Nature Index science cities ranking reflects high-quality scientific and technological achievements and cooperation of institutes, countries, and regions. Beijing contributed nearly 20% to China's total share in Nature Index, according to the index this year.

In addition, Beijing has ranked third in this year's Global Innovative Hubs Index, which has rated 119 cities and megalopolises worldwide based on three indicators of research innovation, innovation economy, and innovation ecosystem since 2020. Notably, Beijing's patent stock in artificial intelligence ranked first in the world.

This year, 10 Chinese cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Guangzhou, and Wuhan are ranked among the top 20 science cities in the world, two more than last year.

Researches on earth and environmental sciences as well as addressing climate change and pollution have promoted Chinese cities' ranking in the Nature Index. Beijing and Nanjing are the two cities registering the fastest development in the fields across China.

Besides, 19 Chinese cities have been listed in the top 100 Global Science Hubs, representing a sustainable increase in Chinese cities' overall scientific innovative abilities.

"Beijing and other Asian cities are rising rapidly in the field of science, technology, and innovation," said Zeng Rong, vice president of Tsinghua University. As a global science hub, Beijing is obligated to enhance international cooperation in science and technology, which also promotes the building of a community with a shared future for humanity, Zeng said.
