The Second Beijing Winter Games kicked off Monday at the National Indoor Stadium in Beijing. Nearly 2,500 representatives from governmental agencies and sports delegations attended the event.

Since its inception in 2018, the sports event has played a vital role in cultivating athletic talent, popularizing winter sports, and laying a foundation for the launch of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

Meanwhile, the legacy of Beijing 2022 went far beyond the arena. This year's Beijing Winter Games serve as an important platform to further carry forward the Olympic spirit and facilitate training for upcoming major winter sports events, officials said at the opening ceremony.

The Games are divided into the youth group for competition, and the mass group for mass participation in sports. Over 1,500 young athletes from across the city will compete in four events including skating, skiing, ice hockey, and curling.

The event is jointly organized by the People's Government of Beijing Municipality, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, and the Beijing Sports Federation. Competitions will last through January 2024.
