China's Ministry of Public Security on Tuesday made public a number of typical criminal cases involving cyber violence on the backdrop of frequent occurrence of such cases in recent years.
In one such case, while within the probation period for suspension of sentence, a culprit surnamed Zhang, in an attempt to continue to manipulate the victim, illegally obtained the victim's private information through locators and wiretaps, hired online spammers to spread the victim's intimate videos and photos, and fabricated report letters to the victim's employer, resulting in the victim suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Zhang had been sentenced to six years in prison for the abuse of personal information, creating disturbances and intentional assault, the ministry said.
In another case, a number of suspects were hired to unleash cyber violence against minor victims by various means such as spam phone calls, using the names of the victims to apply for organ donation, and mailing the victims funeral wreaths and joss paper, resulting in the victims slipping into depression and even experiencing suicidal thoughts.
Other cases included suspects posting advertisements offering to take orders for launching online abuse in exchange for money, and suspects disseminating abusive information about the victim through short videos, provoking other online users to attack the victim.
Cybersecurity departments of public security organs nationwide will continue to take strong action against acts of cyber violence and strengthen collaboration with other departments to eliminate the breeding grounds for cyber violence and ensure a clean cyberspace, according to the ministry.
