China has handled about 7,000 ecological and environmental damage compensation cases in the first 11 months of this year, an official said at a press conference on Thursday.
Zhao Ke, head of the laws, regulations, and standards department at the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, said these cases involved a total compensation value of about 4 billion yuan (about 563.24 million U.S. dollars).
Between January and November, China has restored wetlands of about 1.49 million square meters, farmlands of about 1.7 million square meters, and forests of about 10 million square meters, said Zhao.
"The ecology and environment will be more beautiful through these restoration actions," said Zhao, adding that reforming the compensation system for ecological and environmental damage is an important measure going through eight years now.
The Ministry of Ecology and Environment will further promote the legalization, standardization, and science-orientation of the compensation work for ecological and environmental damage, according to Zhao.
The ministry issued 58 standards in the past year, bringing the total number of ecological and environmental standards currently in effect to 2,357.
The time is ripe for formulating an ecology and environment code, said Zhao, given that China has 35 laws involving environment and resources.
