Beijing has selected the Chinese capital's 10 most beautiful streets and alleys in 2023, according to a list announced by the municipal urban planning and management authority.
This year's list includes Dongbuyaqiao Hutong, Xicaoshi Street, and Zhonglouwan Hutong in Dongcheng district; Lanman Hutong and Liuyin Street in Xicheng district; Yangmei West Street in Chaoyang district; Wenhuiyuan Road in Haidian district; Beiyuan North Road in Tongzhou district; Changsheng Street in Changping district; and North Street of the Yongning Ancient Town in Yanqing district.
These passageways stood out thanks to their unique charm and distinctive features. Zhonglouwan Hutong infuses both traditional and modern elements. The hutong has provided residents with access to amenities and services, while preserving one of the city's best-known cultural landmarks, the Drum Tower. The garden-like Wenhuiyuan Road in Haidian district serves as a cultural hub for residents and tourists. Featuring an embossed wall engraved with the eight greatest sights of ancient Beijing, the 1,300-meter street is divided into four main sections according to different cultural themes.
The campaign to select the top 10 most beautiful streets and alleys in the capital has been held for five consecutive years since its launch in 2018.
The selection effectively demonstrates the city's progress in the management of its backstreets and alleys. Beijing has undertaken two rounds of renovations for backstreets and alleys across the city in the past six years, and plans to complete renovations on an additional 5,393 streets and alleys by 2025.
