The storage ring of China's High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) has been successfully installed in the Huairou Science City in Beijing on Dec. 11.

This ring is part of China's High Energy Photon Source project and stands as one of the largest light source accelerators in the world and the largest in China. The storage ring is designed to store high-energy, high-quality electron beams while generating synchrotron radiation, which is used in scientific research.

With a circumference of 1,360.4 meters, the storage ring contains 1,776 magnets. To ensure the smooth movement and turning of high-energy electrons at near-light speeds in the ring, the precision error in magnet installation must not exceed the diameter of a human hair. According to Pan Weimin, chief commander of the HEPS project, the storage ring is the project's most challenging part in terms of scale and precision.

Up to this point, the project has made significant progress, including beam extraction from the linear accelerator and booster. The storage ring's magnets, mechanical components, power supply, and pre-alignment system were all developed in advance. This apparatus, resembling a magnifying glass, is expected to emit its first beam of light by the end of 2024.
