Beijing Shijingshan district announced Tuesday it plans to transform the former No. 4 blast furnace of the Shougang Group into an exhibition and conference center. The project is part of the district's efforts to revitalize its industrial heritage and promote economic development.
The No. 4 blast furnace, located in the heart of Shougang Industry Heritage Park in the north of Shougang Park, was shut down in 2008. It will be converted into a three-story facility featuring exhibition space, meeting rooms, and a multipurpose area. The project is expected to be completed by the 2024 Beijing International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS).
The transformation of the No. 4 blast furnace is part of Shijingshan district's broader effort to revitalize its industrial heritage. In recent years, the district has converted the site into a mixed-use development that includes office buildings, apartments, retail stores, and public spaces.
The district is also transforming other industrial sites in the area. In 2023, the Babcock & Wilcox Beijing Co., Ltd. ceased operations, and the site is being converted into an intelligent technology park. Meanwhile, the former Beijing Heavy Electric Machinery Works has been transformed into the Beizhong Science and Culture Industrial Park, featuring a modern art museum and an intelligent computing center.
These efforts are creating new jobs and businesses in the district, while preserving its industrial history.
