The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Major Historical and Cultural Resources Map was released this month celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei coordinated development initiative. The map offers a systematic analysis of the region's historical and cultural resources, and demonstrates achievements made in the integrated protection of its cultural heritage.

By the end of 2023, China was home to 57 World Heritage sites, with eight located in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. These include notable landmarks such as the Great Wall, the Palace Museum, the Summer Palace, the Grand Canal, and the Chengde Mountain Resort.

Additionally, the region boasts eight national historical and cultural cities, 10 national historical and cultural towns, and 38 national historical and cultural villages. It is also the site of 474 major cultural heritage sites under national-level protection.

The map showcases the region's mountains and rivers and highlights its rich historical and cultural resources. According to Tang Yuyang, executive vice president of the Beijing Great Wall Culture Research Institute at the Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, the map allows for a deeper understanding of the region's profound history and the close connections between its cultures.

The map features the Ming Great Wall, stretching from Shanghai Pass in Hebei to Shanxi province, equipped with a sophisticated military defense system. This section is the best-preserved and most representative part of China's Great Wall, which spans over 20,000 kilometers, according to Tang.

Additionally, the Grand Canal, passing through Xingtai, Cangzhou, Langfang, and Beijing's Tongzhou district, played a significant role in the movement of materials between southern and northern China and in fostering regional economic cooperation and cultural communication, Tang noted.

"The map aids in the coordinated protection and innovative utilization of cultural heritage resources, promoting the establishment of an integrated mechanism in this regard," said Zhang Chunyan, vice dean of the School of Architecture at Tianjin University.

"More innovative research will be conducted in the future based on the map to serve the integrated protection of cultural heritage sites in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region," Zhang added.
