On Feb. 26, Beijing's 1.6 million primary and secondary school students began their spring semester. According to the municipal education commission, their aim is to achieve high-quality development through a series of reforms. These measures include establishing curriculum reform pilot zones and experimental schools at the city level, promoting the management of educational groups, implementing trial reforms of sports teaching, strengthening scientific education and cultivating innovative talents.

To meet the demand for school admissions, an additional 20,000 primary and secondary school places will be created. Measures such as pairing assistance and optimizing resource allocation will also be adopted, with the goal of improving the quality of basic education. Simultaneously, the construction of reform pilot zones and experimental schools will be expedited, with the aim of developing a curriculum system that reflects the unique characteristics of the capital city. Meanwhile, the promotion of scientific education in primary and secondary schools and the establishment of youth innovation institutes are also key components of the plan.

The physical and mental well-being of students will be prioritized in primary and secondary education. The reforms will deepen the evaluation of physical education and initiate pilot projects for characteristic sports teaching. Emphasis will also be placed on strengthening the public health system within schools and establishing comprehensive systems for mental health education and services.

Additionally, comprehensive reforms will be implemented, introducing city-level branded courses, optimizing digital schools, and enhancing digital literacy and the application of artificial intelligence in education for both teachers and students.

Moreover, significant attention will be given this year to the development of teaching staff, promoting mechanisms for teacher exchanges and rotations and strengthening the allocation and cultivation of teaching resources.

Through these initiatives, Beijing is committed to achieving high-quality development in basic education.
