The National Forestry and Grassland Administration officially awarded Beijing the title of "National Forest City" at the beginning of this year. Currently, the capital's forest coverage rate stands at 44.9%, with a total of 1,065 parks and more than 2,000 species of wild animals and plants coexisting across the city.

Thanks to efforts from various parties, Beijing has transformed from a city lacking greenery into a flourishing garden city.

For instance, since the 1980s, a tradition of voluntary tree planting has taken root, with people from numerous organizations and schools pitching in throughout Beijing's urban areas every spring.

Moreover, the city has launched two rounds of afforestation and greening projects since 2012. Over the past decade, More than 30 green spaces, each exceeding 10,000 mu (about 667 hectares), have been established in the plains of Beijing, while 260 green areas, each totaling 1,000 mu, have been added, forming the cornerstone of the "National Forest City" endeavor.

In 2016, the city embarked on the construction of a forest city, establishing a plethora of urban leisure parks, pocket parks, small-scale green spaces, and village forests. As a result, the per capita park space has increased to 16.9 square meters.

According to official statistics, a newly established city forest park covering approximately 50 mu in Chaoyang district has the capability to absorb 3,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide and release 2,190 kilograms of oxygen daily, while also trapping 10.86 kilograms of dust each day.

Notably, Beijing has removed barriers and fences from over 100 parks across the city, allowing visitors to enjoy greater access to the parks.

Beijing's commitment to greening remains steadfast. By 2024, the capital city plans to add an additional 10,000 mu of afforestation areas, as well as establish 200 hectares of new parks and green spaces, aiming to achieve a citywide forest coverage rate of 44.95%, according to the Beijing Municipal Forestry and Parks Bureau.
