Beijing recently approved a plan to build a greenway network spanning over 5,000 kilometers by the year 2035, connecting the central urban area, plains, and mountainous regions, providing residents with easy access to green spaces throughout the city.

The plan was jointly developed by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Planning and Natural Resources and Beijing Municipal Forestry and Parks Bureau.

Since 2013, Beijing has started comprehensive greenway planning and construction, completing over 40 projects totaling approximately 1,465 kilometers in length, including the Three Hills and Five Gardens Greenway and the Greenway in Beijing Garden Expo Park.

With goals of building a garden city and resilient urban environment, the new plan aims to improve spatial layout and enhance service quality. By 2035, municipal-level greenways are to exceed 2,000 kilometers, while district-level greenways to surpass 3,000 kilometers, ensuring the vitality of the greenway system alongside urban development, according to the plan.

The municipal-level greenway network will connect over 5,000 residential areas, approximately 780 villages, more than 460 scenic spots and parks, about 460 historical and cultural resources at all levels, and over 150 metro stations, achieving full coverage within a 15-minute walking distance from rail transit stations, said an official in charge of the greenway program.

Notably, the Second Ring Road Greenway, boasting ancient historical and cultural charm, will connect important attractions such as the Ming City Walls Ruins Park, Jinzhongdu Park, Yonghegong Lama Temple, Guozijian, Ditan Park, and Tiantan Park. The planned length of this greenway is approximately 33 kilometers, with about 27 kilometers already completed.
