The 15th Beijing Olympic City Sports Culture Festival & the 5th "8·8" Beijing Sports Shopping Carnival kicked off Thursday night, marking the 16th National Fitness Day and celebrating the Chinse capital's legacy as the only city in the world to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics.
Unlike previous years, this year's two festivals have converged, featuring a rich variety of activities to further spark public enthusiasm. During the opening ceremony, five themed activities were launched. A sports carnival presented events such as 3 x 3 basketball, breakdancing, and parkour, with many audiences participating and enjoying the excitement of competition. Over 20 Chinese and international sports brands unveiled their latest sportswear during a showcase event. The inaugural Bird's Nest Sports and Culture Consumption Festival covered concerts, sports events, and various youth sports activities. There are also exhibitions from past Summer Olympics and dual-Olympic-themed gift packages attracting visitors to view and take photos. Additionally, a cycling event along Beijing Central Axis was also held, where hundreds of cycling enthusiasts joined to celebrate the National Fitness Day.
Gao Yunchao, deputy director of the Beijing Olympic City Development Center, said that the highlight of this year's activities is the integration of business, culture, tourism, and sports, which leverages resources from both Beijing and Zhangjiakou to offer participants a richer and more diverse experience.
The opening ceremony also saw the announcement of a series of major sports competitions scheduled for the second half of the year in Beijing, including the 2024 China Open tennis tournament, the World Table Tennis (WTT) China Smash at Shougang Park, the 2024-2025 FIS Snowboard World Cup and FIS Freestyle Skiing Big Air World Cup, the ISU Speed Skating World Cup (Beijing leg), and the ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup (Beijing leg).
Aside from the aforementioned activities, sports and cultural events such as children's triathlon, the Beijing International Sports Film Week, and a youth Olympic education campaign will also take place.
Furthermore, during the sports shopping festival, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports will set up sub-venues across 16 districts of the city, offering various activities to further enrich the cultural life of residents.
