The "Gang of Four" refers to the counter-revolutionary clique of Jiang Qing, Zhang Chunqiao, Wang Hongwen and Yao Wenyuan.

In an attempt to seize state power, they took advantage of the "cultural revolution" to persecute a large number of senior revolutionaries, government officials and progressive intellectuals.

On the night of September 6, 1976, the CPC Central Committee took Jiang Qing and her cohorts into custody for investigation. On October 14, the CPC Central Committee announced the smashing of the "Gang of Four," which marked the end of "cultural revolution."

The whole nation responded with celebrations.
