A court in East China has agreed to consider an appeal by the former Chongqing party leader.

Bo was convicted of bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power last month and sentenced to life in prison. At his trial, Bo denied all the charges in a fiery defense.

Bo Xilai was removed from office last year amid a scandal that also saw his wife convicted for the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood. News of the appeal was announced on the website of the high court in Shandong, the province where Bo's initial trial was held. It said "within the appeal period, Bo Xilai refused to accept the court's first judgment and submitted an appeal through the Jinan Intermediate People's Court to this court.

After the appeal period expired on October 8th, this court decided upon examination to accept his appeal, in accordance with the law." No timeframe for the appeal process was specified in the brief statement.
