A top official of Yunnan said on Sunday that the province will strengthen security to prevent violent activists from making the border province a frontier to sneak into other countries.

Qin Guangrong, Party chief of Yunnan, said the province shares more than 4,000 km of borderline with Southeast Asian countries and is one of the frontier areas for China's further opening-up. The province will do its best to cooperate with neighboring countries, he said.

An expert on international relations at Yunnan University, who asked not to be named, said the short distance to neighboring countries made Kunming "a desirable option" for terrorists because they are able to sneak into neighboring countries after conducting violence against civilians. Qin said the province would also fortify anti-corruption efforts to fight against any violence that threatens people's lives.
