The governor of Heilongjiang is promising no genetically-modified food is being grown in the northeastern Chinese province at the moment.

However, Lu Hao says he does support the development of GM technology.

GM food remains a controversial issue in China.

Public opinions differ as to whether the modified genes in certain crops will affect human beings.

Heilongjiang is China's top grain producing region.

In 2014, the province accounted for one-tenth of total grain production in China.
