Discussion about human rights would be empty without sustainable economic development to go with it, according to Chen Shiqiu, vice president of the China Society for Human Rights Studies.

His remarks came at the 6th Beijing Forum on Human Rights, which opened on Sept. 12 in the Chinese capital.

In his speech, ,Chen outlined five aspects of building an environment for sustainable human rights development. He talked about the political, economic, social, cultural and legal environments.

Development itself is an unalienable human right, as well as a prerequisite for the people's survival and improvements in living standards, Chen said. The right to development is especially important for people in developing countries.

China has developed very rapidly, and its growth has become more scientific and sustainable, which has safeguarded its people's rights, Chen noted.

The annual forum is co-organized by the China Society for Human Rights Studies and the China Foundation for Human Rights Development. It was initiated in 2008.
