Death Toll Rises to 11 in Jiangxi Freeway Pile-up

The death toll in Sunday's multi-vehicle pile-up on the Shanghai-Kunming freeway has risen to 11 following the death of a seriously injured passenger, said sources from the General Detachment of Jiangxi Provincial Traffic Police.

The 82-vehicle pile-up occurred on Sunday in heavy fog on the Shanghai-Kunming Freeway inside Zhangshu, a city in central Jiangxi Province. Ten people died at the scene, 40 others were injured.

The highway between Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi, and Zhangshu, another city in the province, was closed to traffic until Monday.

Tens of millions of people are traveling by road, air and sea to get home for the beginning of Spring Festival which begins with the celebration of Lunar New Year's Eve on Feb. 17.
