Shanghai Youth Set New Standards for Future Spouses
Adjust font size:

Sound finances and good looks are no longer enough to snag a young spouse in Shanghai.

A new survey shows that young white collar workers in the metropolis now care more about the personality of prospective spouses.

The Shanghai Evening Post on Wednesday reported the prestigious Fudan University surveyed 649 young white collar workers on what factors they were looking for in their future partners. The respondents came from the finance, computer technology and publishing sectors. Their average age was 27.

The top five qualities the young people looked for in their future spouses were being considerate, healthy, easy-going, smart and good at housekeeping. Being rich and good-looking only ranked eighth and ninth on their wish list.

Wang Yan from the university's department of psychology says the result shows young people today now look for their spouses in a more rational way. They no longer focus on superficial factors like appearance and material wealth. They are more interested in their partner's inner qualities.
