Shanghai prosecutors are expected today to approve the arrest of Yang Jia, the 28-year-old man from Beijing who allegedly stabbed six police officers to death in the Zhabei District Public Security Bureau, the Beijing Times reported yesterday.

The report, citing an inside source, said Yang will undergo a psychological test in accordance with legal procedures.

Previous reports from the Shanghai Public Security Bureau said Yang allegedly stabbed nine police officers and one security guard at the Zhabei bureau on July 1. Six officers had died by midnight that day and the others are in stable condition at hospital.

However, according to the Beijing Times, one more officer was slightly injured in the stabbing spree. Kong Zhongwei had his stomach slashed, but he was discharged from hospital and is still busy investigating the case, the insider told the newspaper.

Shanghai Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng visited the Zhabei police station at the weekend and encouraged officers to keep fighting crimes, protect residents and maintain social order, especially before next month's Olympics.

"Public security work is the most dangerous and hard job in peacetime. The government and society should give more understanding and support to our police officers," said Yu.

He said Shanghai's public security was good overall, and the city government has every confidence that police can maintain social order.

The suspect's motive is still unclear, although a previous police announcement said it was a revenge attack. Yang had been questioned by Zhabei officers in October for allegedly stealing a bicycle, the bureau said earlier.

According to the Beijing Times, Yang set fire to gasoline bottles in front of the bureau's office to distract ground-floor security guards' attention.

Later he allegedly stabbed 48-year-old guard Gu Jianming as Gu tried to stop him. After entering the office, Yang allegedly attacked three officers in the lobby.

An officer rushed downstairs, trying to bring Yang under control after receiving the guard's call. He was also stabbed.

Yang then broke into rooms on the 10th, 11th and 21st floors and stabbed the other officers.
