With the start of 2009, seniors in Beijing over the age of 65 will be able to take the bus, visit parks, and go sightseeing for free, Beijing Evening News said on Tuesday.

Beijing municipal government officially announced a plan about special treatment for old people on Tuesday. According to the plan, residents over 65 with a Beijing residency permit can travel by bus and visit scenic spots for free. Those between 90 and 99 will also receive a monthly allowance of 100 yuan (US$14.66), with 200 yuan for those over 100.

Old people in Beijing will also receive special treatment in hospitals. Large and medium-sized hospitals will give priority to seniors in the areas of registration, examination and billing. Community health service centers will provide priorities for old people for examinations and home visits. And law firms, notary offices and other legal organizations will offer legal services for free or with discounts.
