Tunnel collapse kills 1, injures another in Beijing

A worker was killed and another was injured after a pedestrian tunnel under construction collapsed near the Olympic basketball venue in downtown Beijing Thursday, according to local authorities.

The accident took place at 7:50 a.m. at the construction site near the Wukesong Indoor Stadium in the western Haidian District, about 11 km west of Tian'anmen Square, burying two workers of a construction company from the southwestern Sichuan Province, a spokesman with the Beijing municipal government said.

The injured worker is being treated at a local hospital, but his condition is not immediately known.

Rescue work was completed by 10:15 a.m. There are no other causalities.

The Haidian District government has set up a team to investigate the cause of the accident, the spokesman said.
