Fossilized dinosaur eggs were first discovered in Tiantai in 1958, and to date 44 egg fossil locations have been found.

In 2002 a large fossilized dinosaur egg was discovered on a construction site in Tiantai County. It was 43cm long, 14.5 cm high, oval and partially damaged.

With the cooperation of international experts, a researcher from Zhejiang Museum of Natural History, Jing Xingsheng, carried out a comprehensive analysis of this large fossilized egg.

In 2007, he published an article in Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences and suggested that the egg, laid by a kind of large-scale theropoda dinosaur, belonged to Xixia subset of giant eggs - many dinosaur egg fossils were found in the Xixia Basin of China's central Henan Province. Limited by the available technology for the past 7 years, scientists have not yet completed repair work on the fossil.

According to Professor Wang Qiang, who has participated in the repair work, the team has repaired the egg taking care not to damage the surface texture of the egg, as surface texture is the main parameter for the classification of fossilized eggs. For the time being early stage repairs have been successfully completed, and the remaining work will be done in laboratory.
