4 killed by lightning strike in Guangdong

Four people were killed and two more injured in a lightning strike Wednesday in Foshan City, in south China's Guangdong Province.

The publicity department of Shunde District Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) of Foshan City confirmed the incident Thursday.

The accident took place around 4 p.m. Wednesday at a construction site in Ronggui Community in Shunde District, and the victims were all migrant workers at the construction site who had taken shelter from the storm in a shed.

Residents said it began to rain heavily at 3 p.m.amid loud lightning bolts. Eight workers at the site took shelter in a shed 10 square meters in size. The shed was hit by lightning an hour later.

One survivor said he and another worker escaped the shed after they saw six others inside the shed knocked down by the lightning strike. The two who ran out of the shed survived.

When an ambulance from Guizhou Hospital arrived, four workers were found dead. The remainder had burns. One of those is still in a coma, said a source from the hospital.

The local weather department said late Wednesday southern parts of China is now in a frequent storm season.
