A spokesman for the department said the fire could be fueled by materials like pen ink, which was flammable.

No casualties had yet been reported, he said.

Black smoke from the two-story warehouse in a development zone in Longwan District could be seen from the downtown area and a pungent smell permeated the area.

Only the framework of the brick-steel structure remained standing.

The warehouse is owned by the Wenzhou Aihao Pen Trade Co. Residents said the building was only 10 meters away from a chemical factory, but away from residential areas.
