A man who held his girlfriend hostage at knife point in a hotel room in Shanghai Tuesday afternoon has been seized by police.

The hostage taking occurred at about 4 p.m. on the second floor of the Jiajia Hotel in Qingpu District.

In about eight hours, police had been trying to make the man put down the knife. Around mid-night, police broke into the room and put the man under control.

The woman was unhurt but seemed scared. She was carried to hospital by an ambulance.

A love conflict might have been the reason of the crime, police said.
