All 106 orphans in Yushu Huaide Welfare Home are safe, after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit Yushu County, Qinghai Province.

Principal Daile Pengcuo said 17 orphans were taken away by their relatives and the rest were placed in a park.

The orphanage was set up by Pengcuo in 2007 and operated mainly on donations. Though the three-story building withstood the quake and suffered only a few cracks, the children were still moved out as a precaution.

Standing in line for four hours Thursday, Pengcuo received six tents. He fetched some food from his bother's family and got drinking water from a nearby well, enough to feed the children for a day. They were in urgent need of food and water, he said.

The orphanage's teachers have left to tend to relatives who had died or were injured in the quake. Pengcuo is looking after the children with another volunteer.

As of Friday morning, 791 people had died and 11,486 injured from the earthquake, which hit early Wednesday morning. Another 294 people remain missing.

Pengcuo can be reached at 13897165720.
