Shandong will see a fundamental change in its environment as the province puts great efforts into construction of environmental facilities, said Jiang Yikang, Party secretary of the province.

By the end of 2010, all 59 rivers under the province's control were treated to reach a water quality able to sustain fish.

Water quality will be improved, with over 90 percent of urban effluent treated.

Shandong issued requirements on strengthening aquatic ecosystems last November that calls for 60 billion yuan (US$9.4 billion) in investment in six major projects over the following 10 years.

Shandong has now spent 1.3 billion yuan (US$204.6 million) to protect wetlands. Statistics show Shandong's current 17 wetlands nature reserves cover 620,000 hectares, about 35 percent of the province's total wetlands.

According to the province's plan for the 12th Five-Year (2011-2015), Shandong will continue its efforts to restore wetlands.
