Quake death toll in Sichuan alone exceeds 33,570

More than 33,570 people were confirmed dead in last week's massive earthquake in Sichuan Province alone and 5,260 others remained buried as of 4 p.m. on Monday.

Li Chengyun, vice governor of Sichuan Province, said at a press conference here that 60,020 people were rescued from earthquake debris and 4.85 million people were relocated.

The national death toll from the 8.0-magnitude quake rose to 34,073 as of 12:00 a.m. Monday, according to the earthquake relief headquarters of the State Council.

And 245,108 people were injured, the headquarters said.

According to the Ministry of Health, about 52,934 people have been hospitalized nationwide and 7,979 have recovered while 3,304 died in hospital.
