A photo exhibition featuring the May 12 earthquake in China's Sichuan province was held in the Chinese embassy in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Friday.

Over 100 pictures taken at quake-hit sites chronicling the suffering of the people and China's rescue and relief efforts were on display.

The exhibition, organized by the Chinese embassy, featured photos shot by Xinhua photographers at the forefront of the disaster area.

Yang Hyong Sop, vice-president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK, attended the exhibition, accompanied by China's Charge d'affaires in Pyongyang, Xing Haiming.

"Those pictures demonstrated to the world the actual situation of the Chinese quake relief," Yang said.

"Faced by the unexpected quake, the Chinese people and army spared no effort to overcome the disaster, which showed the power of China's unity," he added.

Nearly 100 DPRK officials from the foreign ministry and other departments attended the exhibition.

A major earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale jolted China's southwestern Sichuan province and neighboring regions on May 12. The death toll from the quake is close to 70,000, while nearly 20,000 people are reported missing.
