Building more 750-kilovolt-above extra-high-tension power grids will be the key point of China's 2006-2010 outline on state grid expansion.

Friday's China Securities Journal unveiled China's future plan on state grid development between 2006 and 2010, which has just been finished by the State Power Grid Development Company.

Liu Zhenya, general manager of the State Power Grid Development Company, said the central government will increase input on state grid construction in the coming five years in hopes of easing the bottleneck on power supply and to establish an effective state grid by 2010.

Liu said a key step to solve electricity-thirst problem in some areas, the state grid company will pay more attention to extra-high-tension power grids above 750-kilovolts in the coming five years, which will be capable of transmitting electricity for longer distances.

According to Liu, a demonstration project for a 1,000-kilovolt transmission line will be built in China before 2010, and several 800-kilovoltis transmission lines will also be built in the next five years.

In addition, a 750-kilovolt power grid will be in shape in the northwest of China in the coming five years, with a number of 500-kilovolt and 330-kilovolt transmission lines to cover more regions in demand for electric power, said Liu.

According to Liu, China's first demonstration projects for 750-kilovolt transmission lines have operated smoothly for 100 days, with a total of 250 million kilowatt-hours electricity transmitted by January 4 this year.

By 2020, China will form three major extra-high-tension power grids in the north, middle and east parts respectively, and realize effective distribution of energy resources within the whole country. Liu said.
