A survey showed that 51 percent of Taiwan parents have no idea of what the Internet content rating system is as the local government, Internet content providers and parents were urged to take action to protect children who use the Internet, according to a report reaching from Taipei.

The survey was conducted on 1,200 parents from Jan. 5 to Jan. 15 with the margin of error of plus or minus 2.88 percentage points.

The survey found 40 percent of children surf the Internet without their parents' supervision and children who live together with their parents and grandparents have a better idea about Internet safety and content rating.

The report suggested that local government seek to improve children's Internet safety by setting up a child on-line protection committee while communication authorities should meet regularly with Internet content providers and the Internet content rating agency to work out measures to encourage the content providers to comply with the rating system.
