Native of Yaonan, Jilin Province, born in October 1948. Joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in January 1970. Began working in January 1974. Holds a master's degree in economics.

January 1974: Vice secretary, secretary of the CPC Najin Commune Committee in Yaoan County, Jilin Province.

March 1975: Standing Committee Member of the CPC Yaoan County Committee; secretary of the CPC committees of Najin Commune and Lingxia Commune.

July 1980: Vice secretary of the CPC Yaoan County Committee.

March 1983: Secretary of the CPC Fuyu County Committee, member of the CPC Baicheng Prefectural Committee, Jilin Province.

May 1985: Vice secretary of the CPC Committee, commissioner of Baicheng Prefecture, Jilin Province.

August 1987: Secretary of the CPC Committee, commissioner of Baicheng.

January 1988: Secretary of the CPC Baicheng Prefectural Committee, Jilin Province.

December 1989: Secretary of the CPC Siping City Committee, Jilin Province.

March 1990: Secretary of the CPC Committee, chairman of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress, Siping, Jilin Province.

December 1992: Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Jilin Provincial Committee.

June 1995: Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Jilin Provincial Committee; secretary of the CPC Committee of Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture.

October 1996: Vice secretary of the CPC Jilin Provincial Committee; secretary of the CPC Committee of Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture. From July 1994 to June 1997, studied in the College of Economics of Jilin University and obtained a master's degree in global economics.

December 1997: Vice secretary of the CPC Jilin Provincial Committee.

April 1998–October 2001: Member of the Standing Committee, vice secretary of the CPC Jilin Provincial Committee.

October 2001: Appointed by the CPC Central Committee as the member of the Standing Committee, secretary of the CPC Qinghai Provincial Committee.

January 2002: Chairman of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Qinghai Province; May, elected as the secretary of the CPC Qinghai Provincial Committee.

January 2003: elected as the chairman of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Qinghai Province.

August 2003: appointed by the CPC Central Committee as member of the Standing Committee and secretary of the CPC Gansu Provincial Committee.

January 2004: elected as chairman of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Gansu Province.

2006: Managing vice president of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee.

November 2007: Member of the Standing Committee, secretary of the CPC Jiangxi Provincial Committee;

Su Rong was alternative member of the 14th, 15th CPC Central Committee, and member of the 16th Central Committee. He is now member of the 17th CPC Central Committee.
