Chairman of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region

Ismail Tiliwaldi, of the Uygur ethnic group, is a native from Shfu County, Xinjiang, and was born in November 1944. He began work in September 1967 and joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in May 1973. He graduated from the Department of Mathematics at Xinjiang University.

His previous official posts include: deputy chief and chief of the Personnel Department for the Keshen Prefecture, deputy commissioner of Keshen, deputy secretary of Keshen Prefectural Party Committee, commissioner of Keshen, secretary-general for the Xinjiang autonomous regional government, deputy political commissar of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps of the Army, standing committee member of the CPC Xinjiang Autonomous Regional Committee and deputy secretary of the Committee of Political and Legislative Affairs under the CPC Xinjiang Autonomous Regional Committee.

He is currently serving as deputy secretary for the Autonomous Regional Party Committee. In January 2003, he was elected as chairman of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region at the first session of the tenth Xinjiang People's Congress.

He is an alternate member of the 16th CPC Central Committee.
