Do Fat-cat Professors Inspire Potential Research Students?
Adjust font size:

An unofficial fortune list for Chinese professors, compiled by a website, has sparked fierce debate among Chinese netizens.

Some say that it provides them with guidance when applying for postgraduate studies. One online forum member nicknamed David says that the fortune list has brightened his attitude to the future. He now feels that, since there are teachers who know how to make money, as well as how to conduct research, becoming their student will offer a short cut to becoming rich.

Differing somewhat from David's opinion, some students think that this ranking proves that certain teachers have a lot of practical experience, experience lacking among many ordinary university professors.

However, not all students greet these fortunes positively. One netizen, nicknamed Maggyi, questioned whether these rich-and-busy professors still have time to teach their students. As a student herself, she hopes that teachers will focus more on their teaching, rather than shallow, mercenary pursuits.
