In early 1941, the Kuomintang staged the Southern Anhui Incident. The headquarters of the New Fourth Army and nine thousand of its troops in southern Anhui Province were unexpectedly encircled and attacked. Commander Ye Ting was detained when he went to negotiate with the Kuomintang. Deputy Commander Xiang Ying was murdered by traitors after breaking out of the encirclement.
