Hou Hsiao-Hsien's Film to Open Un Certain Regard Section in Cannes
Adjust font size:

Master Taiwan film director Hou Hsiao-hsien's movie The Red Balloon will open the Un Certain Regard section of the 60th Cannes Film Festival this year.

The film is a remake of Le Ballon Rouge by French director Albert Lamorisse. It stars French actress Juliette Binoche and the production team is made up of French and Taiwan talent.

In January, the Cannes Film Festival also invited the director to shoot a three-minute short film to celebrate its 60th birthday.

Hou Hsiao-hsien plans to renovate a baroque-style deserted theater in Tainan in south Taiwan for the short film. The theater played silent films before the 1930s and is the oldest in Tainan.

Taiwan actress Shu Qi and actor Chang Chen will play a couple living in 1960s Taiwan.
