The United States on Monday transferred one detainee to Bahrain, one detainee to Iran and two detainees to Pakistan from the American military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Pentagon announced.

With Monday's transfer, approximately 340 detainees have departed Guantanamo for other countries, and about 435 detainees still remain jailed at the detention facility at the US naval base.

Of those detainees still being held at Guantanamo, 110 have been determined by the US government as eligible for transfer or release, the Pentagon said in a statement.

Their departure "is subject to ongoing discussions between the United States and other nations," it said.

The United States opened the detention facility at its naval base in Guantanamo in January 2002, to hold terror suspects and Taliban members mainly captured during the US-led war in Afghanistan.
