The Fifth Session of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee

     
 

The Fifth Session of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee was held in Beijing March 3-13, 2002.

As in previous sessions, the last session of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee also attracted the great attention of the CPC's third-generation collective leadership. During the session, seven standing committee members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee participated in its panel discussions.

During the session, CPPCC members voiced their opinions concerning major political, economic and social affairs. By March 8, the session received a total of 3,583 proposals, with 3,368 of them put on file. It also received 765 written speeches, and 37 members took the floor at three plenary meetings.

CPPCC members present at the session highly evaluated achievements made in the past year and expressed confidence in reaching the goal set for this year. Meanwhile, they expressed concern about issues in relation to reform, development and stability. They focused discussions and proposals on issues of how to adapt to WTO entry, increase farmers' income, improve the social security system, assist disadvantaged groups of people and establish a social credit mechanism.

Of its 2,267 members, 1,975 attended the closing meeting of the CPPCC session, which adopted the political resolution of the Fifth Session of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee, a resolution on the work report of the Standing Committee, a resolution on the report on the proposal handling work since the Fourth Session of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee, and a resolution on the examination of proposals submitted to the Fifth Session of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee.

In his speech at the closing meeting, CPPCC Chairman Li Ruihuan said that, since the First Session of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee in 1998, CPPCC committees at all levels have made active efforts in exploration while performing their duties, and created many valuable experiences. He called on all CPPCC members to continue performing their duties in the last year of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee, and to carry forward their achievements and correct their shortcomings, while making preparations for the new CPPCC National Committee.
