The 19th CPC National Congress in figures

The following six graphics depict China's achievements over the last five years (2013-2017) in economics, poverty alleviation, employment, cutting of red tape, environmental improvement and military reform.

Economy

China's economy has registered a slower but stable performance with good momentum for growth.

Poverty alleviation

Since the 18th CPC National Congress, President Xi Jinping has traveled across China, with more than half of his official visits related to poverty alleviation and development.

People's living standards have been improved. The number of people living in poverty in rural areas was reduced by 12.4 million in 2016, including more than 2.4 million people relocated from inhospitable areas. More than 10 million rural residents are estimated to escape poverty in 2017. The total number from 2013 to the end of 2017 will surpass 66 million people, almost equivalent to the population of France.

Employment

Employment growth exceeded projections. The registered urban unemployment rate stood at 4.02 percent at year-end 2016, the lowest level in years. For China, a large developing country with a population of over 1.3 billion, attaining this level of employment is no easy task.

Cutting of red tape

China is aiming to transform government functions, deepening reforms to streamline government administration, delegate more powers and improve regulation and service, to reduce the discretionary powers of the government and give the market more freedom to take its course.

The government has abolished the requirement for permits for a number of production and service activities, and merged different forms of certification required of businesses into one certificate.

Environmental improvement

The government strengthened ecological conservation and made fresh progress in pursuing green development. The share of clean energy consumption increased by 1.7 percentage points in 2016, while the share of coal consumption decreased by 2 percentage points.

Military reform

China has been restructuring the People's Liberation Army (PLA) as part of a push to modernize China's armed forces.
