Wong Kar-wai gets honorary degree

Hong Kong local filmmaker Wong Kar-wai was bestowed an honorary doctorial degree from the Open University of Hong Kong on Wednesday.

Wong received the degree in social sciences wearing his trademark sunglasses, which he said had witnessed his career in filmmaking.

Wong, 49, studied graphic design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for two years, before dropping out to attend a training session of film directing organized by TVB station.

From there the director unfolded his much celebrated career, but he never finished higher education. However, Wong said on Wednesday that he didn't regret his decision.

Wong Kar-wai was the best director at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival for "Happy Together." His first English-language film, "My Blueberry Nights," was the opener of this year's Cannes festival.
