Being a major highlight of the ongoing Hong Kong Arts Festival, Henrik Ibsen's classic play "The Master Builder" helmed by top Chinese theatrical director Lin Zhaohua wrapped up its three-day run amid lengthy applause on Sunday.

With simple prop design -- pretty much a red sofa, a huge wreath and a bottle of wine -- Lin Zhaohua has managed to demonstrate the complexity of Ibsen's original play in entirety, a Xinhua news agency report said on Monday.

"The Master Builder," considered by critics as the most autobiographical among all of Ibsen's works, centers around the emotional struggle of an aging architect, Halvard Solness, as he tries to retain his prominence while wanting to achieve true satisfaction at the same time.

In Lin Zhaohua's rendition, veteran actor Pu Cunxin fully and vividly exposed Halvard Solness' desire for success while highlighting his inner struggles with equal efforts, the Xinhua report says.

Award-winning actress Tao Hong's portrait of Solness' worshiper Hilde Wangel further enhanced the show as a strong and emotional impact on the audience, the report says.

The prolonged influence was obvious as many audience members were in hot discussion of the show after the curtain call. Xinhua quoted Li Oufan, a notable scholar, as saying after the show that he was very impressed by director Lin's interpretation of such a complex play.

Lin Zhaohua, hailed as China's most prominent theater director, first presented the show in 2006 at the Beijing Ibsen Festival.

The 36th annual Hong Kong Arts Festival runs from February 14 to March 16.
