An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 rocked Papua in easternmost of Indonesia on Thursday morning, but there is no initial report of damage or casualties, the country's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

The quake rattled at 08:34 a.m. Jakarta time (0134 GMT) with the epicenter at 306 km southwest of Jayapura of Papua and at a depth of 60 km, an official of the agency Rosidi Sulaiman told Xinhua by phone.

The intensity of the quake was felt at 3 MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity) in Tanah Merah of Papua, he said.

The quake happens as Indonesia has recovered from 7.6 and 7.3 magnitude quakes in West Sumatra and West Java respectively, that killed more than 1,000 people and devastated infrastructures and hundreds of thousands of houses.

Indonesia is laid on a vulnerable quake-hit zone called the " Pacific Ring of Fire," where two continental plates meet causing frequent seismic and volcanic movements.
