A tornado hit a town in the U.S. state of Texas Wednesday, reportedly wounding several people and causing property damage.

Four businesses and homes were heavily damaged when the tornado touched down west of Waskom in east Texas late Wednesday afternoon, said Waskom Police Chief Rex Hawsey.

The storm, which carried heavy rains, hail, lightning and high winds, knocked out power and snapped trees all over the area.

Emergency crew rushed to the scene and were treating the injured, according to the local newspaper Marshall News Messenger.

Police said they were accessing the damage.

Several people were trapped in their homes due to the tornado, the National Weather Service was quoted by local media as saying.

The U.S. National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for northeast Texas until 10 p.m. local time Wednesday, the reports said.
