Director of Center of Agrometeorology of National Meteorological Center Mao Liuxi suggested how to retrieve the agricultural loss in different regions in China after the spring chill.

The northeast region is preparing for raising rice seedlings now but the on-going low temperature will postpone it and does great harm to the rice that has already been sown. Farmers in the region mostly raise rice in the greenhouses. Cooling or snowing will lower the temperature in the greenhouse. Therefore, they should heat the greenhouse and get rid of the snow. They should also spread more manure to prevent the seedlings from frozen.

Winter wheat and winter rape in North China and Yangze River and Huai River area are mostly affected by late frost. This year's winter wheat's growing period is seven to 20 days later. The later the growing period, the stronger its capacity resist freeze. Therefore, the frozen harm this year is not as severe as before. Before or during the frost, farmers should take some prevention methods such as covering, smoking, watering or spraying some chemicals on the wheat.

Since April 15, the cold air will stop. The weather was turning warm and frost getting finished. The farmers should spare no time to spread manure, water and intertill to turn the weak seedling strong and promote seedlings to tiller and head sprouting.

Now is the best time to sow the seeds for the first rice in the southern part of China.

Farmers should also strengthen management for the fruit trees and greenhouses. After the weather turns warm, the farmers should lift the curtain of the greenhouses to let the temperature quickly go up. Fruit trees should also be manured to make up the loss.

For the southwest area that is hit by draught, farmers should strengthen irrigation to reduce the effects on spring crops as much as possible.

South of Anhui Province, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and some areas in Jiangxi also suffered big rainfall when they were experiencing low temperature and frost. Therefore, the farmers should remove the water and clean the ditch as soon as possible. Especially for the farmland with great soil humidity, measures should be taken immediately to reduce the water content of the root.
