Covered with forests, tundra, and rivers, the North Slope is a vast expanse of permafrost in northern Alaska. It is the home to caribou, polar bear, and arctic fox, and also possesses North America’s biggest oilfield.

But rising temperature would cause changes in the permafrost, which may finally destabilize both forests and buildings.
