The biggest flood peak of the year on the Ganjiang River, a major branch of the Yangtze River, passed through Nanchang City, capital of east China's Jiangxi Province, Monday, local authorities said.

The flood crest passed through Nanchang early Monday with a water flow of 12,800 cubic meters per second, the Nanchang City Hydrographic Bureau said.

When the peak arrived, the water level in the Nanchang section of the river reached 21.69 meters, below the warning line.

Heavy rains have pounded Jiangxi Province since Friday and caused one death and forced 94,000 to evacuate.

By Monday, 3,769 homes in Jiangxi had been damaged and direct economic losses are estimated at 986 million yuan (about 144.4 million U.S. dollars).
