Venezuela and Mexico agreed to cooperate closely in international efforts to fight climate change, visiting Mexican Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa said Thursday.

After meeting her Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro, Espinosa said both agreed to work closely to achieve a constructive agreement "to allow the international community to create an action agenda to stop climate change."

"Climate change is an issue affecting all of us. It has high economic costs and even includes the loss of human lives," she said.

Maduro said it was important to hammer out a pact on carbon dioxide emissions at the 16th UN conference on climate change to be held in Mexico later this year.

The two foreign ministers also discussed ways to reactivate a mechanism of consultation, including trading, investment and scientific, environmental and energy cooperation.
